Warm A Chilly Cabin

[IMGCAP(1)]Winter flying in the northern tier is not for sissies. The ideal winter attire for occupants of my 1960s Bonanza is a pair of snowmobile pants and a t-shirt.

The stock heating system is woefully inadequate to warm a front seaters lower extremities during below-zero operations, while the greenhouse cockpit can create shoulder-high temperatures in 70s and 80s on a sunny winters flight. At night, the airplane is bone shatteringly cold, something thats not unusual for those of us who fly in extremely cold conditions.

Like all single-engine piston operators, I can warm up the cockpit a bit with a roll of Duct tape, masking wing root vents and air intakes. New gaskets for the...

The Haves and Have Nots

You own a 1966 Comanche? No PFD for you, sport. And thats just as well; more appropriate products will emerge.

I read the LED lighting upgrade article in your July 2014 issue and thought the following would be of interest. LED lighting is superb. Beech Model 18

If you can afford the gas and hack the maintenance, the Twin Beech will haul a ton, literally. For pure panache, its unbeatable.

Seaplane Training, KSN770 Counterpoint, Narco Avionics Support

I read with interest your coverage of seaplane transition training in your last issue, since Im planning on earning my rating to transition to the Glastar amphib Im building. I was surprised how gently Aviation Consumer treated a product that has been promised for years, has been offered for sale since 2014, yet has so many major shortcomings. I wish you guys would write another report on servicing old avionics. It seems there are many in service that need repair.

Bellanca Viking

There’s really nothing quite like the Bellanca Viking. Motor up to the ramp and inevitably someone from the inquisitive outdoor lunch crowd will ask...

Post-Wrecks Revisited: Accidents, Incidents

In response to the “After the Dust Settles: Protecting Yourself” article (November 2021 Aviation Consumer) on dealing with a post-crash aftermath, including subsequent regulatory...

Avionics Survey

I recently finished reading the avionics satisfaction survey report in the December 2023 issue of Aviation Consumer, and while the thrust of the article...
