Textron Aviation unveiled upgrades to avionics, interior and other systems for its line of Cessna piston aircraft, including the 172 Skyhawk, 182 Skylane and Turbo Skylane, and 206 Turbo Stationair HD models.

The announcement comes during the runup to the 52nd annual Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo, which takes place April 14-19, 2026, at Lakeland Linder International Airport (KLAL).

These new additions include the Garmin G1000 NXi System Release 7 avionics upgrade and Lycoming dual electronic ignition system, or dual EIS. After introducing dual EIS on Skyhawks in July, 2025, the company has made the feature standard for all new Cessna piston aircraft. Models with these upgrades are expected to enter service later this year or early in 2027.

The avionics upgrade includes Garmin Smart Glide, which assists pilots during engine-out emergencies. The new equipment also includes Remote Wake, a system that allows the avionics to be powered up from outside the aircraft during preflight checks, updates and flight planning.

“Garmin System Release 7 and the dual electronic ignition system improvements provide pilots with advanced tools that simplify operations, improve situational awareness and deliver a more modern and intuitive flying experience,” said Lannie O’Bannion, senior vice president, sales and marketing.

By replacing the aircraft’s previous, traditional dual magneto ignition systems, Cessna is in part responding to pilots, engineers and others who for years have advocated for a widespread change to electronic ignitions that are more efficient than magnetos. The dual EIS system reduces the parts count, requires less-frequent maintenance and cuts operating costs. Textron said the new equipment strengthens the piston lineup’s reputation for capability and value.

“We continue to invest in innovations that support the long‑term success of our Cessna piston products,” O’Bannion said.
